As a woman, I was not sure what to expect walking into this class, knowing some advertise that the classes are for any and all, but knowing that reality doesn’t always present that way. I immediately felt welcomed and respected walking in. Ryan was knowledgeable and professional, creating a comfortable environment where questions were encouraged. 2 day multi- state concealed carry permit class with Ryan. Ryan was a very professional, knowledgeable, and a helpful instructor. The classes went by easily, and he took the time to answer all questions. If there was something he didn’t know, he would tell you, not try to make something up and would find out for himself to continue his learning.

The only suggestion would be to have at least one other Range Safety Officer on the Range. Some of the incompetence on the line was abysmal.

(Before going on, let me be clear, Ryan constantly reiterated safety and how to keep composure and patience on the line without doing anything that would be unsafe to themselves and/or the people on the firing line. He drilled it into the class.)

Group one, 2nd from the left(next to me) kept stove piping and babying the slide instead of racking it, and would turn the gun in my direction and ripped the stove piped bullet out of the gun, then had it happen again. With my gun holstered, I backed up to not be in the guns line while telling him to keep it forward and rack the slide. Ryan came over to assist.

When we finished, in group 2, the far right shooter, on the end had a stove pipe. Ryan was assisting another woman with a jam in the center of the group. As the lady on the right end was trying to get his attention, she turned her entire body “lasering” everyone in line, twice. Myself and another guy started walking up, and telling her to keep the gun pointed forward.

I would recommend more space between persons on shooting range. It was very disconcerting to have hot brass flying around on both sides of me, and some shells hitting me while I was trying to aim at the target. I did then start to wait till most had shot, then I would shoot. I did much better hitting the target. Just a suggestion. Thanks for a great class.

I just finished up my recertification for DC and MD. PTP (Ryan and Amanda) offer an incredible product from start to finish.
If I could give 10 stars for safety I would. Each training module starts and finishes with safety. Before you leave the training, you will know how to handle a firearm safely if you haven’t learned anything else. I didn’t know this site existed, so this will cover both my interactions with PTP.
Setting up the training is easy and painless. As soon as you contact PTP, they will reach out to you to see how they can help. Once you report to training, very welcoming folks will check in quickly. They offer a lot of services to make the visit as close to a One-Stop process as possible. I have used PTP and paid them to do all my paperwork. For me, it’s a great value, and it would be impossible for me to get the paperwork completed on my own; they will do as much of the process for you as they can, and for the remaining tasks, you will be provided step-by-step instructions, to help you finish everything up.
The training is of the very best quality. Ryan keeps the class engaged, and the videos shown are very clear and easy to follow. At the end of each training subject, there is a Q&A session to ensure everyone is clear on the topic. Any training can be very dry and boring, but Ryan brings his experiences and puts the current topic of discussion into a real-world scenario or a past experience that helps you understand how the topic could play out in real life.
I’m an old Army guy, so doing drills has become the way I have learned for over 20 years. Ryan’s drills are great for strengthening your fundamentals and instilling the correct firearm handling.
One the range is safety, safety, safety as it should be. I chose to use PTP’s firearms. I’m always willing to fire someone else’s ammo. I never owned a Glock; I thought they were unsafe due to not having a manual safety, so I always carried a 1911. In class, we broke down a Glock for cleaning, and I was amazed at how easy and light they are. After training, I also felt comfortable enough to buy a Glock 48, which is now my daily carry. I also identified how sloppy my draw from the holster was, so I had time and money to clean it up and get more proficient at the identified weaknesses.
Using a firearm correctly is the ultimate responsibility and this training will get you on the path to doing it judiciously.

PREPARATION – PTP supplies all firearms and ammo – Just bring yourself. Leave your personal firearms at home.

LOCATIONS – Locations vary, but most are in out of the way places because instruction must be in an area where the discharge of a firearm is safe and legal. If you don’t live close to where the classes are held, consider getting a hotel room nearby. I did, and it just made things easier.

INSTRUCTION- Ryan is very patient and will remain on each topic until he is sure that everyone is ready to move on. MD regulations require that classes last the entire day. My class consisted of about 20 students. Each of them was serious about handling firearms and there were no “wiseguys”. There is a lunch break and my location in Clinton had plenty of close by options for a quick lunch. You may want bring along snacks and beverages to consume during instruction.

ADD ONS – I strongly suggest letting PTP submit your application. The cost is very reasonable and it avoids mistakes. Amanda was great to work with.

OVERALL IMPRESSION – Classes moved along at an orderly pace, parking was easy, classmates were serious and pleasant and Ryan is a very good communicator and instructor. If you feel the need to legally own and carry a concealed firearm, stop shopping around and sign up with PTP. I am a long time, experienced firearms owner.

From the time I met them at a fair in Leonardtown they took the time to answer all my questions and got me really motivated to finally get my HQL which led me to get my concealed carry. Before I attended this class, I had no handgun experience. My fiancé Daniel started Ryan’s class before I did and he has been schooling me on gun laws he learned from his class experience. While I listened and soaked up the information, I was a little apprehensive about actually handling a handgun. Ryan put all that tension to rest. Ryan’s method of teaching made me feel extra comfortable and confident. He debunked myths I thought were true and he opened my eyes to new and interesting laws I previously had no idea of. Once I made it to the outside range, my heart was beating so fast and my hands were sweaty. After listening to Ryan speak, I could feel the worry and anxiety melt away. I definitely feel like Ryan is MY INSTRUCTOR!!!! After gaining a great shooting score, my confident level has increased 10 fold!!! I will definitely sign up for more training!!! See you soon!!!

I am a “transplant” from Illinois where I had held a CCL for many years. Since Maryland did not recognize my Illinois CCL, I decided to take the class with PTP.

My instructor was Ryan. I do have to say that he was extremely professional and knowledgeable. I asked a couple of questions on the differences between what I had in Illinois and Maryland. He answered them as well as I could expect. And yes….he even taught me (former military) a better way to hold my pistol!!! I thought I was pretty good on a range but after Ryan’s instruction and slight change to the way I held a pistol….I was near perfect on my shots!!! I even saw him teach someone who had never held a gun before how to shoot with near perfection. He truly takes his time to ensure yo know what you are doing or to make you even better that you thought you were.

I have to give Ryan and PTP 5 stars! If yo are doubting yourself or are just a transplant like me…go see PTP for all you training needs. Thank you Ryan for your professionalism and expertise!!

Although I fairly knowledgeable about fire arms, and fire arm safety, (and didn’t actually need the class since I’m a Veteran) I found the two days fun and interesting. He has a compelling delivery that keeps the class’s attention throughout, and has a program structured so ALL the relevant bases are covered for someone with ZERO experience, yet there is plenty of time to ask questions and discuss points that may come up.

The practical training was very worthwhile. The shooting portion helped a LOT of people get comfortable with the necessary motions as well as the principle of aiming accurately.

I feel very luck to have had the opportunity to “punch this ticket” with him. Getting the finger printing and the passport photo done made the whole process “easy-peasy, lemon squeeze.”

I can’t say enough about Mr. Gass, he is well prepared when he starts his training. He has a way of getting your attention when he is explaining something that is very important. I still go over the parts of the weapon, the laws for Maryland and other state’s. I can say that I can remember 95% of what I learned in those two days of training, because Mr. Gass is an excellent instructor and teacher. I have to give 5 stars to PTPGuns and the instructor. This class was my renewal certification and I can certainly say that I learned a heck of a lot more than my prior training of 2 years ago with another training program. The instructor was extremely helpful and knowledgeable on the topics he taught us. At no time did I feel pressure to be perfect, because practice is key. I have recommended this program to a few friends because when you leave you want to go right back into the gun range and practice. The information provided such as legal and gun groups was immensely informative and helpful. You definitely won’t walk away not reflecting on the course or the teaching, in fact, you will find yourself actually in the mirror practicing if you can’t get to the range. Just on gun technique and reciprocate your cadence on handling your weapon. post-class, I actually became one with my weapon, which was a meaningful need to be confident as a concealed carry member and keep in mind of the laws and do’s and don’t s for a gun owner.

He has all the skills and inside knowledge of state and federal court cases, changes to the law, as well as lawyers we get on monthly retainer should the need arise. When I was out at the shooting range I was having a little bit of trouble shooting. Ryan took a card out and put it where I could see the two white dots in the back and the front sight. After he did that, I was having no more trouble with sighting. He was a big help.

I took a women’s only course and loved it!!! Ryan was a great instructor and approached the training with both professionalism and humility; a fantastic combination when learning to fire a weapon.
While I have prior military training I was very rusty and really needed some help. Learning in a low pressure comfortable environment was all I could ask for and Ryan did a great job of that!

On my 4-hour drive home after the last day of the course, I thought I would have preferred to have shot 250 rounds and had less class time. Ryan is an excellent instructor. I took the One Stop Shop class to earn my CCW for MD, FL, VA, AZ, and UT. From start to finish, Ryan is professional and relatable. I entered the class with apprehension that I would withhold all the knowledge needed to feel comfortable and confident upon the end of the 2 day class. By the end of Day 1, I already knew I was in the right place. The way he teaches about laws, firearms and handguns is easy to comprehend. He is very open to questions and talking through any confusion that any of us students had until it was clarified. The hands-on aspect was very detailed and I appreciated his teaching method: talk about what was going to happen followed by a visual example of our instruction then also guided us step-by-step when it was our turn to do the exercise. It was very beneficial to practice through all the safe motions of using a handgun with his guided drills before having any actual ammunition loaded. I am very pleased that I found PTP and have obtained my CCW through their training. I look forward to joining in more training events with Ryan and the PTP crew in the future to continue deepening my knowledge and skillset with them as my guide!

I can not say enough good things about Ryan with PTP firearms training. I took my HQL class back in 2018 and just finished my Maryland Wear and Carry class. Ryan is a great teacher, very knowledgeable and treats all of his students the same no matter what your background with firearms. For some people, it is their first class and they can feel nervous or anxious. Ryan makes sure you are 100% comfortable and confident. He truly cares about each and everyone of his students. When he teaches, it’s not only how to do certain things but he explains why it is important and why we are doing it. Safety is very important and from the beginning of his class to the end I always felt safe. His humor also makes the class fun. 16 hours is a long time, and not once did he lose my attention or became bored. I love that he also makes its very easy for you to apply and submit your application for your Maryland Wear and Carry. He shows you step by step with pictures and illustrations. I definitely recommend PTP to anyone looking for training and will always use them in the future.

let me begin by saying Ryan is one of the most patient, and caring instructors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I watched him go from person to person helping them correct bad habits in handling a gun, so that they will begin to correctly handle and draw the gun from their holster. I was actually not all that comfortable around guns. But, this class taught me the skills I needed to feel more comfortable both handling and cleaning a firearm. It was a long day of class but it was WORTH EVERY PENNY AND EVERY HOUR SPENT! They keep it straight forward and offer help if you need it. It was very important to me to take this class so I can protect myself if need be. I would HIGHLY recommend this class to any person who has interest but especially those who, like me, come in without that comfort of having fired a firearm frequently. I’m 60 years old and wanted a CCW permit most of my life but knew it was impossible in the state of Maryland without being a business owner or delt with money all day. I spoke with mike from PTP on the phone when governor hogan said he would not stand in the way of the right to carry in Maryland.
mike told me the time is now, so I jumped on it. he signed me up with Ryan that week. Ryan was very good at teaching and helping all the way to get certified. Ryan Gass is a great instructor . He covers all aspects of gun safety and proper handling of a firearm. He covers the MD State laws and the do’s and don’t when you carry a firearm. Ryan is a professional and makes the class informative and enjoyable. I recommend the course to anyone who wants know the proper way to carry.

I was very nervous/anxious about taking this class and probably would have canceled but there was a no refund policy.
I was first impressed by Amanda Gass’ efficiency in getting everyone fingerprinted and photographed. It was as if she knew us all already and she was ready with answers.
Ryan was very knowledgeable and spoke in terms that were understandable to someone who was not exactly versed in handguns. He helped everyone and treated us all the same regardless of our handgun experience, he was very patient. I was VERY impressed by his safety measures, he verbalized what he wanted done and waited until everyone complied. He watched us shooting, noticing each shooter individually and gave us tips and focused on OUR SAFETY as well as his own. Very impressive.

My wife and I attended the HQL class that was taught by Ryan last week and I must admit that I was blown away by his ability to bring the class to life with all of his real world examples and experiences.

I took the Maryland Wear and Carry course last week. It was intense and certainly worth it! Ryan is knowledgeable and very capable of training others. Ryan did a great job at my HQL training on 1/22/2022. He was very professional, experienced and knowledgeable. The class segments on Maryland Law, handgun use and anatomy were excellent. But even better were the follow-on question and answer sessions. Ryan’s broad and deep experience really came out strong. He gave real world, experience based answers to each of many questions asked. The sessions on handgun assembly/disassembly and cleaning, and “wet fire” were also excellent. The hours I spent in his HQL class were worth every penny.

Best word to describe Ryan and his staff at PTP is EXCEPTIONAL. I was actually reminded of my days growing up and learning gun safety from my grandfather. He was a stickler for the rules but made it a joy to learn the nuances of it all. Ryan and Joey’s approach is old school yet with all the knowledge of today’s laws and firearms available on the market. I would just add that this is my first handgun class and have no one else to compare them to but after my great experience with PTP I can see no reason to go elsewhere.

A highly motivated, high energy and very knowledgeable instructor. What I most liked about him was his down to earth approach and his patience in fielding my questions. He fed us a lot of information in that short two day period. Not only did I learn a lot about gun laws, but also how deficient I am in the complexities of these laws. These gun laws, constantly changing have become so complex in some instances that even our own law enforcement officers are deficient in their knowledge as he pointed out and that’s a bit scary. I do have one recommendation. It would be nice to have name tags for fellow shooters. They don’t have to be fancy just write in. It’s nice to know all the people in the class. I’ve always been the curious type.

I took my Maryland Wear and Carry renewal course on September 11, 2020 with Reid Colomo. I was impressed with Reid’s knowledge and expertise. Reid was very personable with the class and paid special attention to each course member to make sure they were comfortable with the information being presented and were able to successfully complete training feeling confident to either apply for their first Wear and Carry permit, or renew their current permit. Practical Training Professionals has always had a great team of skilled instructors and I will continue to use PTP for all of my firearm training needs.

Ryan is professional and informative! I attended the ladies only class and was surprised to see a male instructor and half thought he would put in less effort in teaching a room of females; I was wrong. I live in Maryland and learned a great deal about gun safety and weapon ownership. I had never held a weapon and always seemed a bit intimidated but Ryan took the time to put my nervousness at ease and help me become less intimidated. I would recommend the class to everyone male or female if they want to successfully learn your right to bear arms, proper weapon usage, and storage.

I enjoyed learning from Ryan and staff at PTP, I thought I knew all there was to know about firearms, and laws for havering and wearing firearms in Maryland, but learned a lot. PTP does not shortcut instruction, we went a hour longer then class schedule yet Ryan kept it interesting to the point I didn’t realize that he did until I got in the car to go home. Ryan and staff take pride in their business on making there students knowledgeable, and safe with firearms.

Ryan, Joey, and the rest of the staff were all very knowledgeable and accommodating. The classroom instruction was informative and kept your interest the entire time. The field day was very enjoyable. Safety was at the forefront throughout the event. Not only was the course very informative and safe, but the friendship shared throughout the class was very refreshing. Gender, race, and religion were all set aside, and all of the participants were treated with the utmost respect, as well as treating each other with a high level of respect.
I would highly recommend the training that PTP provides. Whether you’re a seasoned firearms enthusiast, or someone who’s just getting started. You won’t be disappointed!!

Ryan was very informative on all levels of gun safety ad law during training. What I appreciated the most, was when it came time for hands on cleaning of the guns, I could not get the slide off and he was very patient with me guiding me through in taking that piece of the gun off. Not just doing it himself so we could move on with the class. Very professional and I would highly recommend him for gun safety training.

I know you may delete this but this may help someone else. I recommend that you tell your customers that they may not be able to get a license to purchase or carry a gun if they have a felony. Not all felonies can be expunged as I later found out when applying for my license. Additionally, there is no need to join the membership if you cannot legally carry a gun. Membership is not refundable. Other than that, my experience with Ryan and the others was great. Thank you.

Must have training. Great instructor with lots of knowledge, skill and real life recommendations. Ryan’s PTP class teaches you what is expected from the safety of
handling a firearm to what yo know about and how to research the law requirements. For you first time shooters he helps you overcome those fears. I watched first hand in our August 2020 class.

40 + years ago I was a long bore rifle competitive shooter. I’ve had a CCP for almost a decade in many other states and never thought I had a chance in Maryland. Not only did I learn a lot in Ryan’s class but because of his detailed approach to the process I just earned the Maryland CCP permit. I can’t recommend his class highly enough.

Being comfortable in an environment to handle and learn fire arm safety are key factors to this safety course. Ryan walked us through the class step by step. Was very patient and understanding. I walked away from the class feeling more comfortable around a firearm than I did before I took the class. Highly recommend taking one of the many classes that are available.

I took the HQL and MD Wear and Carry class (One stop shop). Ryan Gass is a fun but no nonsense top notch trainer. He is very knowledgeable in his field and can easily convey to you the skills, safety and the gun law training that you need in laymen’s terms. I highly recommend taking the two day class as you will thoroughly enjoy it and you will walk out of there more informed and confident than you were when you first walked in.

This is real life, real safety, so much fun, and so much information I was taking notes loving all the knowledge the instructor gave. I had attended another firearms course prior to attending a course with Ryan. I learned of his course through “word of mouth” while striking up a conversation with someone at a fingerprinting agency. After getting the contact info, I reached out to Joey which was my first contact with this company. Best firearms class I have taken. I carry a firearm every day for work and Ryan is a well learned, disciplined instructor and creates a strict but welcoming environment. I recommend PTP to all who could benefit from a course like his. A little more help with paperwork would be nice, but the class is a great deal at twice the cost.

Let me first say that I signed up for the HQL class and found out that I didn’t need to because I had my hunters safety license, but I am so glad that I did. Reid was a great instructor! I took the class to become comfortable and confident with carrying for protection. I was extremely apprehensive when it was time for the range. Ryan and Reid were both excellent instructors. Very knowledgeable, approachable, and down to earth when conveying the course curriculum. Both emphasized firearms safety constantly, which I believe is paramount for a course of this nature. Ryan and Reid teach this course in a manner that is not too complicated for a first-time shooter, but still interesting for an experienced firearms user. The style of the class is laid back but well structured. I would and have recommended Ryan, Reid, and PTP to friends who are interested in firearms courses.

I struggled with taking my gun apart for the cleaning portion of the class and I was getting so frustrated/ embarrassed. He simply told me to calm down and keep trying, not to get frustrated! Ryan Gass is very professional and knowledgeably. He makes learning about firearms infesting and he keeps things light while he’ll teaching about the seriousness of handling firearms. I was very well prepared by the time we ever seen an actually firearm. We learned to breakdown the firearm and reassemble prior to ever learning to fire it. Day 2 was live fire and again we went through everything prior to ever loading the firearm. His staff is very professional as well. They are very passionate about firearms but more impressive is that have a high passion for teaching others about firearms in a very safe and responsible manner

Ryan Gass is a honorably discharged U.S. Marine with 5 years of service. His first duty was in Kings Bay, GA securing the Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic, including nuclear weapons and submarines. Upon conclusion of his time at Kings Bay, Ryan received orders to Weapons Training Battalion East at Camp Lejeune, NC. There, Ryan served full-time on the rifle range training Marines and Sailors how to more effectively employ their M4, M16, and M27 rifles from 25 yards up to 500 yards.

After transitioning to the civilian sector, Ryan has worked jobs related to security and firearms including armed security at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, later working armed security in Prince Georges & Anne Arundel Counties. While working sites in PG & AA, Ryan began assisting training other security officers. Inspired by the lead instructor and seeing a different need- Ryan founded Practical Training Professionals in August 2015 with the goal of training average everyday citizens to be safer and more effective in using firearms.
